Newcastle Grime music artist H-Man talks being at his lowest point and seeing Demons.
peep catch up with Grime music artist H-Man Hendaz. We met at ‘The Five Swans Pub‘ in Newcastle’s city centre, and after many drinks, I finally got down to asking some questions.
Grime artist – H-Man started his music career within Newcastle’s rave scene and explains he had so much more to offer on a lyrical level and began to look to Hip Hop for inspiration.
It was at a local Rave night at Gateshead’s Sage building that he first met local Grime and rave Mc – Just B. H-Man was beginning to realise other genres of music including london Grime music and sites ‘Wiley‘ and ‘Skepta‘ as inspirations to this day.
‘Hendaz’ – real name Jamie Thunder-H Henderson recently performed at RAP-TIME, with NATO NORTH EAST. Rap Time is a local open air hip hop night organised by artist’s Rick Fury and Gilly Man Giro. The event is based under Byker Bridge, Ouseburn area of Newcastle upon tyne.
Rap Time was filmed by peep and welcomes local talent within the genres of Grime, Hip hop and Rave music. It was at this event, that peep became familiar with H-Man. He performed the grime song – ‘All For the Toon‘, which is a self reflective social commentary based around the city council’s regeneration initiative.
The project was ironically called – ‘The Rise‘ which saw most of the west end of Scotswood area of Newcastle demolished.
‘The Rise’ Scotswood, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
The Rise was an ambitious council project that saw hundreds of houses and schools torn down and demolished. The project made way for next generation housing projects. It was at this moment that we realised that we both grew up on the same street of Whitehouse Road in Scotswood.
Our conversation then developed into the ugly class system that seems to grip this city. I suggest that the middle class unfortunately sometimes decide where the working class should reside.
Newcastle College Of Art and Design.
Jamie, also mentions his time at Newcastle College of Art. He Explains that a tutor singled him out for being working class. He also suggested that he should ‘work harder’ to achieve his goals within this particular educational system.
H-Man Hendaz, also shares his thoughts and fears when soul searching for some kind of guidance or sign. It was at this point, the grime artist witnessed a Goat. A Goat can be seen as representing an evil spirit or bad omen in the realms of the supernatural. H-Man then decided to pull himself away from the slumber and begin to pull himself out of the depression.
